Mykola Tomenko, Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, is staying with a working visit in Bulgaria, where he attended the 5th International Scientific Conference "Drahomanivski Studii" (Drahomanov Studies) dedicated to the 115th anniversary of M.Drahomanov´s death, and held several official meetings at the National Assembly of the Republic of Bulgaria.
M.Tomenko suggested that Bulgarian academicians and public figures joined Ukraine in the celebration of the 170th anniversary of birth of M.Drahomanov next year. M.Drahomanov lived in Bulgaria for certain time, working as a professor in Sofia University. The collection of books of the researcher became a foundation of the university library that bears his name. M.Drahomanov made a valuable contribution into the development of education and science of Bulgaria. He died and was buried in this country.
"His achievements and heritage are shared by Ukraine and Bulgaria. Thus, the anniversary should be celebrated at the international level," M.Tomenko stressed.
Together with the People´s Deputies V.Zubanov and V.Petrenko, the Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine registered the draft resolution "On Celebration of the 170th anniversary of birth of Mykhailo Drahomanov, Prominent Ukrainian Writer, Publicist, Historian and Public Figure" to celebrate this date at the national level. "Mykhailo Drahomanov is one of the leading pro-European political figures, a co-founder of the Ukrainian school of political science. His heritage as the ideologist of a European Ukraine should be duly assessed and studied," M.Tomenko stated.
Ivan Hrytsenko, Dean of the Law Faculty, who represented Kyiv National University at the Conference, expressed his intention to make a contribution, and declared that the University would support publication of Mykhailo Drahomanov´s works on the occasion of the anniversary.
